6 Simple Ideas to Help Prevent Distracted Driving

Most drivers on the road are aware of the dangers of drinking and driving, but distracted driving can be just as dangerous. Making sure that your eyes are focused only on the road is crucial. But for some, that might seem like a difficult task if they’re used to trying to multitask and taking their eyes off the road for a few seconds. If you can relate to this, let’s take a look at six simple ideas to help prevent distracted driving.

1. Make a List of Things to Do Before Leaving the Home

There are some things you need to do before you leave home if you wish to avoid distracted driving. This includes making sure you’re fed, getting enough sleep, and taking care of any communications before you hit the road. Make a list of these things so that you’re better prepared when you’re behind the wheel.

2. Turn Off Your Electronic Devices

Electronic devices are often a leading cause of distracted driving. Turn off and put away all of your electronics so you’re not tempted to use them while driving. You may even wish to turn off certain features that come built into your car.

3. Put Reminders of the Consequences Around You

It’s much easier to avoid distracted driving when we remember that we can end up on the other end of a wrongful death or personal injury lawsuit. The last thing you want to do is put yourself or other drivers at risk. Write a note that you’ll see when you get into your car to ensure you pay attention.

4. Keep Your Car’s Interior Clean

Messy car interiors can spell disaster if things bounce around or fall where you’re unable to reach them. Clean your car regularly so that no trash can distract you while you’re on the road.

5. Make Sure Pets and Children Are Secure

While we love them, pets and children can be major distractions. The solution? Make sure they’re properly secured before you drive off so you don’t feel the need to take your eyes off of the road and reach back to fix whatever’s gone wrong.

6. Always Pull Off the Road If You Need to Do Something

Whether it’s a call, a child that’s gotten out of their seat, or something else, pull off of the road to take care of the situation. Trying to drive and manage another task is never worth the lives of you or your passengers. Even if it’ll only take a second or you will be doing it hands-free, pull over to take care of the task so your driving doesn’t suffer.

Distracted driving is something that many engage in yet rarely think about. One wrong move can be life-changing for you and other drivers. If you’re looking to become a safer driver or even trying to teach your teens proper road etiquette so that they’re safe when they’re driving, use the six simple ideas above to keep your eyes where they need to be and prevent accidents before they can happen.
