6 Effective Ways to Treat Your Seasonal Allergies

Allergies are the body’s response to external stimuli, such as an environmental or food allergen. They can cause congestion, sneezing, coughing, irritation, and sinus pain. Seasonal allergies are generally caused by changes in temperature and humidity.

In the past, trying to find relief for seasonal allergies has been an arduous process of trial and error that doesn’t always yield any results. Advances in scientific research have made it easier to ease symptoms, and symptoms are on the decrease. Here are six effective ways to treat seasonal allergies.

1. Oral Antihistamines

Oral antihistamines reduce the number of cells that release histamine, which is responsible for causing allergic reactions. Antihistamines such as Claritin, Zyrtec, and Allegra are available over-the-counter and are relatively inexpensive. The only potential side effect is drowsiness, which can be eased by taking them at nighttime or reducing the dosage. These medications also prevent histamine from binding to the receptor in your body.

2. Inhalers

Inhalers are an excellent choice for someone who has severe seasonal allergies and needs quick relief. These come in many forms, such as nasal sprays, gels, and puffers. Quick relief means little to no waiting time for the effects. They can be used when you have an allergic reaction and provide instant relief. They can also be used a few times daily to provide continuous relief. When using an inhaler, keep your head tilted back and breathe deeply through the nose.

3. Eat Local Honey

Local honey can be found in most grocery stores or farmer’s markets. It is taken directly from the hive and hasn’t been processed in any way. It has special properties that help to ease seasonal allergy symptoms. It also has anti-inflammatory properties. This helps to reduce symptoms when it comes to allergies. You can choose from several varieties and flavors. Try dipping celery into some of your favorite honey to get an added benefit.

4. Nasal Moisturizers

Nasal moisturizers are available over the counter and are applied to your nostrils as a cream or ointment. They increase the moisture that is already naturally in the nose and try to attract more moisture to the area with ingredients such as lanolin and glycerin. This can help to hydrate your nasal membranes during allergy season. Keep your nose as moist as possible to get the most out of each breath.

5. Get a Humidifier

A humidifier is a machine used to increase the air’s moisture. There are many different types of humidifiers. They can help to alleviate symptoms such as dryness, congestion, and itchiness by supplying moisture when the nose can no longer do so. Be sure to read the instructions before using a humidifier. Check the water tank often and replace it if needed.

6. Eat Whole Foods

Whole foods are generally easier to digest. They have more vitamins, minerals, nutrients, and enzymes. They are generally lower in sodium, fat, and carbohydrates. You can eat without the extra unwanted calories. Some herbs and spices, such as ginger, cinnamon, and garlic, have anti-inflammatory properties, which will help the body fight off allergies.

Seasonal allergies can be treated in a variety of ways. Some may be more effective or new to you than others. Consider your symptoms when trying to find the best treatment. Try out a few treatments and find the one that works best.
