One of the most popular materials on the Law of Attraction was a book and movie called, “The Secret.” These were created by Rhonda Byrne. This original idea about the law of attraction stated that the reason people’s thoughts controlled what they received in life was because of their unique magnetic frequency. It is believed that each though has its own magnetic wave frequency, which is projected out into the world. There, they meet with other magnetic waves on the same frequency and draw these things back to you. This is how similar things attract each other. The idea is that the universe provides you whatever you ask for with your magnetic waves.
This is based on three basic steps—asking, believing, and receiving. You simply have to have a clear picture/message in your mind of what you want. Then, you ask the universe for it. Once you have done this, you have to believe that you are going to receive that item. To do this, you think, speak, and act as if the universe has already giving you what you want. These actions change your frequency, so the people, circumstances, and things around you move in a way that lets you receive what you have asked for. Finally, you receive by feeling the way that you will feel once the universe gives you what you asked for. This also strengthens your frequency, because you feel good about the desire now.
However, though ‘The Secret’ was among the most popular, it was far from the first time that the ‘law of attraction’ had been mentioned in texts. The word was coined in the book Isis Unveiled: A Master-Key to the Mysteries of Ancient and Modern Science and Theology. This book, published in 1877 and written by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, was the first to use the law of attraction. It would be a profound player in the theosophical movement. Similar ideas were presented in The Art of True Healing, which was written by Israel Regardie. Regardie was known for his ideas and though Blavatsky had written about them first, his ideas were more popular.
Something that must be noted, however, is that these earlier ideas were far from the marketing technique that is used today. In these earlier works, they go into detail about how the techniques provided invite things into your life—but this does not always go as expected. It discusses the idea of spirituality—but not in a way that tells people that they can guarantee riches, happiness, or love if they submit to the ideas and truly believe. These early books focused more heavily on your own role in achieving things. However, they do not provide any guarantee and instead provide an honest view of the information available in these areas.
Why the Law of Attraction Works (When it Does)
One of the good things about the law of attraction is that the principle of thinking about what you want can change the way you think about it. For people who have reached a point of extreme anxiety, sadness, destitution, or desperation, it can provide a beacon that there is hope.
Sometimes, the hope that things will be better is the driving force that people need to take the actions and make the changes in their life to become happier or more successful. Have you ever hit a personal rock bottom, whether it was financially, emotionally, or when dealing with something like an addiction? Sometimes, people give up when they reach this rock bottom. They learn to live in the rock bottom, so instead of having hope or trying to overcome it, they become complacent and decide to just exist there.
Something like the law of attraction gives people in this rock bottom hope that things can improve. Rather than accepting their situation or learning to live with it, it becomes a possibility to make changes and climb out of rock bottom existence. This positivity about the situation makes it an easier obstacle to overcome, which is all some people need to improve.
Another Benefit of the Law of Attraction
Something else that the law of attraction gets credit for is sending the message that nobody is really alone. Since there is a science behind it, the law of attraction does work in some ways. It is common for things to get bad—when one thing goes wrong, several other things follow. Sometimes, life does pile on the obstacles. This can quickly become overwhelming, especially if you are working on overcoming these obstacles by finding the small actions are not enough to escape the accumulating problems.
If you truly believe that things will work out for the better, they will. You can take small actions and see bits of success and then use these to motivate yourself to take bigger steps. When you believe that things will work out on the end, it makes you less afraid of failure. By overcoming the fear of failure, and realizing that even if you fail, it cannot make the situation worse, you are more motivated to keep trying. If there are no consequences for failure, then all they are is a learning experience. By keeping in mind that things will get better if you keep working toward them, it can seem like the universe is on your side and will help you achieve whatever it is that you desire.
The Law of Attraction is Not Simple
The biggest problem with the law of attraction is that it makes people feel entitled to the things that they want in the universe. They believe that if they ask hard enough or think about it enough that the universe must give them the things they are ‘attracting’ with their vibrational energies. It sends the message that getting success in life is so easy that anyone who applies themselves can be successful. However, it relies too much on mental application of the ideas and not enough on physically taking the steps to get the things that you want.
The problem, therefore, is that people who turn to self-help books to learn about the law of attraction expect that the book they are reading is giving them some secret to life. The way self-help books like The Secret are written emphasize that mental processes are responsible for everything. However, you could think about a car fifty times every day and still not get one until you take the action to save money for it. You cannot expect your life to change if you only think about changing—you have to follow through with the actions that coincide with the thoughts.
The bottom line is that you cannot expect to put forth no effort and receive things in life. The universe does not owe anyone anything and the simple act of putting the right vibrations out into the world is not going to grant your deepest desires. It does not matter how much you focus on something or how long you think about it—nothing in life is going to be dropped into your lap without you having to work toward it in some way.
The law of attraction is a powerful tool, but not on its own. It can help inspire, motivate, and keep you focused. However, unless you are willing to critically evaluate your situation and what changes you need to make to get the things that you want, you are not going to achieve anything that you want in life. It is not simple in any way—it requires hard work.
